A suggested checklist of things to consider when a death occurs:

  • Consult a financial advisor regarding Federal estate and State inheritance taxes and investment decisions.
  • Consult an attorney regarding the will, letters of probate, power of attorney, and updating your will.
  • Consult your insurance agent regarding insurance payment options and annuities.
  • Organize important financial and legal papers, and safeguard the deceased’s property.
  • Assess your immediate financial needs, and settle outstanding financial obligations of the deceased.
  • Contact benefit providers such as the deceased’s employer, Social Security administration, Veterans administration for income continuation.
  • Consult family members regarding living arrangements, family decisions, memorials, etc…
  • Be kind to yourself; get the support you need to manage your grief.
