In order to comply with federal tax law, John Hancock is requesting that our policy owners confirm whether they are U.S. persons.  Policy owners who are U.S. persons must also certify their Taxpayer Identification Number.  An IRS W-9 form is being mailed to policy owners who haven't previously certified their TIN.  Should you have any questions please feel free to contact our call center at 1-888-354-6488.

Q: Why is John Hancock required to confirm my Taxpayer Status and Tax Identification Number (TIN)?

A:  Recent developments in federal tax laws make it critical for financial institutions like John Hancock to verify whether or not their accounts are held by U.S. persons.  Complex tax withholding and reporting rules apply to financial accounts, including life insurance and annuity contracts.  Those rules vary depending on the taxpayer status of the account owner.  More stringent withholding requirements apply to accounts held by non-U.S. persons.

Q: Why is an IRS Form W-9 required?

A: IRS Form W-9 is the means provided by the IRS for a taxpayer to certify both their TIN and their status as a U.S. person.

Q:  What is a Taxpayer Identification Number?

A: A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) may be either a Social Security Number or an Employer Identification Number issued by the IRS.

Q: Is this a legitimate request?

A: The protection and security of your personal information is very important to us.  Please be assured that this is a John Hancock Life Insurance Company procedure to ensure and maintain the accuracy of our records.    The return envelope provided lists the public address for the Life Insurance division of John Hancock, which can be found at our website;

Q:  I have previously submitted my TIN to John Hancock.  Why is John Hancock asking for it again?

A:  If you have previously provided us with this information, we would still appreciate you completing the form to help us verify the accuracy of our records.
